F6F-3 White 9/BuNo 40090, Lt. William C. Mosley, VF-1, USS Yorktown, June 1944
LT William C. Moseley, A-V(N), USNR, flying an F6F, was struck over Chichi Jima airfield by antiaircraft fire. He was seen to parachute from his plane. A liferaft was dropped close to LT Moseley, but he was observed to disappear beneath the surface of the water without reaching the liferaft. The submarine was notified but was unable to reach Moseley before he sank.
