P-51D-15-NA, 44-15529, flown by 1st Lt. Lester Grainger of Fullerton, CA, as it looked in December 1944.  This Mustang was Grainger’s third.  All of his aircraft were coded LH-G and all named Lady Grace.  He flew for the 350th Fighter Squadron 353rd Fighter Group out of Raydon, England.

He scored both of his aerial victories on the same flight on Nov. 2, 1944.  Interestingly, the two aircraft shot down were Me-109s that the Germans had painted with British roundels, to try and deceive allied pilots.  He also ran out of fuel on that mission and ditched the first Lady Grace into the English Channel, being picked up by Air Sea Rescue.

The second Lady Grace was ditched on Texel Island, Netherlands by another pilot on Nov. 25, 1944.  The pilot, Lt. Miller, became a POW.
